Out of the Stacks: Utilizing SHSMO’s LGBTQIA+ Collections

In this virtual program from the State Historical Society of Missouri, Steven Brawley, founder of the St. Louis LGBT History Project and SHSMO trustee, leads a discussion on utilizing the LGBTQIA+ collections at SHSMO and the use of one particular collection–the Helen Stephens Collection (C3552)–for research in an upcoming documentary film.

Explore the Society's LGBTQIA+ collections with SHSMO Senior Archivist Heather Richmond as she presents an overview of the resources available and details how to access them at SHSMO research centers across the state.

Watch as Kerri Yost and Steph Borklund, associate professors of digital filmmaking at Stephens College, discuss their research in SHSMO's Helen Stephens Collection (C3552) for their forthcoming film chronicling Stephens' life. Stephens was a Missouri farm girl and runner who won two Olympic gold medals in 1936 at the age of 18. She went on to be the first woman to own and manage her own basketball team. Stephens' lesbian relationships are documented in her collection along with her sports career.
